Try the reported sequence in this order

  1. Exit Over the Hill completely. Note the current per-game controller setting.
  2. Open Steam Library → Over the Hill → Properties → Controller. Change the game-specific Steam Input override to disabled for the Xbox-controller symptom described here.
  3. Relaunch the game. Check steering, acceleration, reverse and the handbrake before resuming a long trail.
  4. If it did not help, restore the previous setting. Keep the failed attempt in your report rather than cycling settings without a record.

The restart order follows cjlizardia's October 17 follow-up; the original suggestion was posted by rofflesvanwagon on October 14. Steam's exact menu wording can change. [1]

What the launch-week thread actually reports

ReporterObserved outcome
Lord Denny, October 14Original questioner confirmed the suggested change worked.
NuCleaR DIveR, October 14Posted thanks directly in response to the workaround.
cjlizardia, October 17Reported success and emphasized closing the game before the change.
GameScrub, October 14Still could not move with Steam Input enabled or disabled.

These are three positive responses and one explicit failure in one thread, not a success-rate study. Several other replies confirm a similar symptom without providing a completed troubleshooting result. Exact controller firmware, client versions and game builds were not consistently recorded. [1]

Check that it is the same problem

  • The game ignores the controller everywhere: test whether Steam detects it and whether it works elsewhere before applying an in-game symptom fix.
  • Only one binding is unfamiliar: check the current control menu rather than treating a default action as a broken controller.
  • The car is stuck in terrain: separate a working throttle with no traction from an input that never registers.

These are diagnostic distinctions. They are not additional confirmed workarounds, and they do not establish wheel or force-feedback support.

If neither Steam Input state works

Record the controller model, wired or wireless connection, whether menus respond, which driving actions fail, and the two settings you tested. Include the game and Steam client versions when reporting to Steam bug reports ↗ (opens in a new tab).

Do not overwrite saves or install an unrelated patch to troubleshoot this symptom. A persistent failure needs the device-specific details that are missing from the original thread.
